Aspartame is one of the most popular artificial sweeteners despite the known dangers of using it. This product, made from the waste matter of genetically modified bacteria, was voted by the FDA to be safe even though there are studies that link it to hormonal problems, psychological illnesses, ALS, memory loss, hypoglycemia, MS, and cancer, among other conditions. The artificial sweetener is considered to be an excitotoxin and neurotoxin that causes neurological illnesses.
It is not news that aspartame is dangerous to use. This was first discovered and exposed in 1999 by The Independent. This information was included in the publication just prior to the G8 Summit that was to talk about whether or not genetically modified foods are safe to eat.
The dangers of using this sweetener may lead to you wonder how it was approved for public consumption. The simple answer is because of politics. Monsanto, a company also involved with other genetically modified foods, has gained a lot control over the food industry through buying out other businesses in this sector. As well, the major corporation has been able to create incentives for government organizations to approve of poisons such as aspartame.
Through these channels, a company owned by Monsanto (known as NutraSweet) now manufactures and distributes this artificial sweetener. The same substance is used to create products branded as Equal, Equal-Measure, and Spoonful.
The FDA has received many complaints regarding the product. Three quarters of food-related illnesses reported to this organization have been directly related to aspartame. However, after 1992, the FDA ceased the documentation of these reports. The dangers of aspartame were left out of any further discussions. This lack of documentation not only can be interpreted as a way for the FDA to cover up such incidents but as a route to destroying any type of statistics related to aspartame-caused illnesses. Thankfully, medical clinics still record these illnesses.
It is interesting to note at this point that Monsanto admits to using the fecal matter of genetically modified e-coli to create aspartame. Knowing this alone should be enough to keep people away from it.
Why it may be difficult to stay away from aspartame
Even though the public is becoming more aware of the dangers of aspartame, the substance has addictive qualities that make it difficult to stop consuming. What doesn't help is that there are so many products containing the substance that it is almost impossible to avoid. Processed and frozen meals, diet sodas, chewing gum, candy, diabetic products, and hundreds of other items contain this poison. In fact, this sweetener is one of the most commonly used product in the category, being found in over 6,000 products - a number that is growing.
Quitting cold turkey
To help prevent the illnesses caused by this sweetener means to avoid the substance as much as possible. If you are used to consuming aspartame, avoiding it may cause withdrawal symptoms. You may find that you experience headaches, cravings, nausea, mood swings, and other types of unpleasant feelings. The good news is that once you get this toxin out of your system, the withdrawal symptoms from aspartame will subside.
Depending on the extent of the damage done by this product to your system, eating a healthy diet may be able to help your body to heal. Dealing with the withdrawal symptoms and the process of healing is generally better than having to cope with the long term dangers of aspartame after a lifetime of its use.
