Nehro is a no-go for the 2011 Preakness Stakes. Ahmed Zayat made the announcement May 17th, just one day before the second-place Kentucky Derby finisher and Mineshaft son was to board a flight from Louisville to Baltimore to vie for the Woodlawn Vase and the garland of black-eyed Susans next week.
Corey Nakatani was to ride Nehro (Mineshaft x The Administrator by Afleet) for trainer Steve Asmussen in the Preakness. Instead, the three-year-old Thoroughbred colt may be pointed for New York’s Belmont Stakes in June and, perhaps ultimately, the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November at Churchill Downs.
"It's a very hard decision, but I want to err on the side of caution," Zayat told the Daily Racing Form. “I'm just concerned about him having four hard races in eight weeks.”
Nehro's previous rider was the late jockey Michael Baze, who was recently discovered dead in his own car in the backstretch barn area of Churchill Downs.
The 136th Preakness Stakes, second gem in the Triple Crown of horse racing, will run on Saturday, May 21st, at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course. The race is limited to 14 starters.
