Ask Meg: Decode the line, "Maybe I'll bump into you here again sometime."

Meg,

"Maybe I’ll bump into you here again sometime." What does that statement really mean? Is it simply a friendly good-bye, an invite, or is it just something someone says when they don't know what else to say? What are the odds of these two people meeting again?

Dear Double D:

I’ll tell you what it isn’t: A pick-up line. When guys say this, they’ve usually got something else going on. And by something else, I mean either another woman or a deficient amount of interest in you.  When someone uses such vague language, it typically means they’re apathetic. In other words, if he sees you again, fine and if he doesn’t see you again, fine. So, if he was truly interested, he would have asked for your number or made definitive plans to “bump into you again.” That’s my umbrella answer.

There’s a small possibility his statement meant something else. You don’t say who initiated the conversation and I think that detail can be very telling. If he approached you, then he may have been looking for an in – a chance to feel you out and give you an opportunity to show some interest. If you were all over him like a toddler on a jungle gym, then he was most likely being polite and letting you down easy.

Either way, it’s a pretty pathetic line. I mean, you’d much rather bump into a man with some balls, right?
