Ask employers valuable questions at career fairs to make a positive impression

Every conversation with a recruiter ends with ‘what questions do you have for me’.  This can be a make or break situation for the candidate.  Since we all know the question is coming, being unprepared or caught off guard will show a lack of professionalism.  Avoid the struggle with these tips:

  • Research something about the company that is relevant to the job you are talking to them about.  This doesn’t mean that you should memorize the annual revenue and ask ‘Are you expecting to have another good year?’.  If there is a product/service/trend that would affect the department that you are applying for, ask about that.  Maybe the company is expanding in a certain area that requires specialized training.  You could ask about how they will be training people for that area.
  • Find out more information about the interview process.  Questions like ‘What is the next step in your interview process to fill positions’ or ‘After this event, when/how will you be contacting qualified candidates’ will give you information about what the next steps will be.
  • Determine whether you are qualified for the job.  Career fair recruiters may have a line of people waiting to meet with them, so you have to make your time count.  Once you have shared examples of how your skills can benefit their company and given them your resume, you can ask what other experience they are looking for.  This will help you talk about how you have those skills or give you information about what skills you need to develop to secure the job.
