Ask Amanda: Do men get maternity leave?

Welcome! This is the 4th installment of Ask Amanda! Ask me any question regarding the workplace by emailing me at amanda_watrous@yahoo.com and I will do my best to provide an answer for you!

new_dad writes: My wife is pregnant and I wanted to know if I could take "maternity leave" from work when the baby is born. Does maternity leave apply to men, too?

Dear new_dad: First of all, congratulations! I did a little research and the short answer is: yes! It's actually called Paid Family Leave. You must participate in the State Disability Insurance Program (SDI), usually taken directly out of your paycheck, to qualify. Paid Family Leave is meant for taking care of a newborn baby, adopted or foster child, seriously ill parent, family member, child, spouse, or domestic partner. There are rules and regulations that you must follow before using Paid Family Leave. Please go to http://www.paidfamilyleave.org/ for more information about Paid Family Leave. Again, congratulations!

If you have a question about work or careers, please email them to amanda_watrous@yahoo.com. I would love to hear from you!

What I find interesting in my business is that some men choose not to ask for the time off, not becuase its usually less money but becuase its deemed as not being manly. If I would have had the oppertunity to take time off when my duaghters were born, I would have, although being a good father is a life long job.

Thats great to know because not all familys are aware of Paid Family Leave. Im sure if people educate themselves before they start a job they will choose to have money set aside specificly for that.
