Asian fraternity dons blackface in viral video

Asian people are no stranger to racism when it comes to their depiction in the media. Comedians constantly mimic an Asian accent in live shows, films use an ill-speaking Asian American as comic relief and it seems that there are constantly new stories popping up involving mimicking gestures of slanted eyes in photos leaked to tabloids.

While Asian people seem to always end up on the wrong side of the joke, a new story in the news has put an Asian fraternity in the hotseat for a video that has gone viral. The Lambda Theta Delta Fraternity at the University of California, Irvine, is an Asian American fraternity.

In an attempt to add humor to their take on the Justin Timberlake song, “Suit and Tie,” some of the fraternity members posted a video donning a blackface. There was a disclaimer provided with the video stating, “no racism intended.” However, there has been a huge backlash over the video because of its inappropriate nature.

The fraternity quickly removed the video and released a statement saying, “Lambda Theta Delta sincerely apologizes for the extremely racist content of the ‘Suit and Tie’ video. The use of black face in the video is incredibly offensive as well as insensitive. This behavior is simply unacceptable and the individuals responsible for the video have already been reprimanded.”
