Ashton, son of former Calgary Flame Brent Ashton, drove Smith head first into the boards in the second period of the Maple Leafs' 4-2 victory over the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Ashton received a two minute minor penalty for boarding and then a five minute major penalty for fighting Flames' enforcer Shane O'Brien.
Smith, who was playing in his second game of the season with the Flames, left after the hit, but did return to the game in the third period.
So far this season Ashton only has one assist in ten games played. Ashton is expected to miss the Toronto Maple Leafs' games in Vancouver on Saturday and at home against the New Jersey Devils on November 8. He is at the present time scheduled to return in Boston on November 9.
It is the first time in Ashton's career he has been suspended.
