Anyone can use Twitter, but it seems these days that actors have really gotten a handle on it and have a huge "fan" following. What seems to get attention on Twitter with celebrities is anything they write about their personal side.

Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide.
So much so that some actors are kind of in competition with each other. As of October 17, 2009, Ashton Kutcher is the most popular user with more than 3 million Twitter followers.
Other actors and entertainers in the line up are LeVar Burton of Star Trek, Demi Moore, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, MC Hammer, Elizabeth Taylor...
Statistics say that the highest draw is for the 25 and over age group, and that is where Ashton Kutcher (31), Oprah (54), Ellen DeGeneres (51), Hugh Jackman (41), even Jack Dorsey himself (32) and other more "mature" celebs fit in.

For those who do not know yet what Twitter is all about, it is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets.
Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers.
Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications.

The service, itself, costs nothing to use, but accessing it through SMS may incur phone service provider fees. The 140 character limit on message length was initially set for compatibility with SMS messaging, and has brought to the web the kind of shorthand notation and slang commonly used in SMS messages.
So far Kutcher seems to have the highest draw of followers, but that can change at any time. The following, too, is apparently due to the personal side of a celebrity. A hypothetical example, say with Ashton Kutcher:
Oops, gotta run, it's my turn to walk the dog. Uh oh it's raining, now where is that umbrella?"
