Sisters and business partners Melissa Reuter and Amy Waddel know a lot about how to keep things in the family. They are the masterminds behind Ashley Lauren's Closet Children's Consignment Sale in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Natives to the Cleveland area, Melissa and Amy bought the existing Ashley Lauren's Closet (ALC) sale from friends who had started it after attending a similar sale in Nashville, Tennessee.
Though other consignment sales have come and gone in the Cleveland area, none have had the staying power of Ashley Lauren's Closet.
In the past twelve years, ALC has grown from 20 consignors to an expected 1,000 consignors for the upcoming spring sale.
Melissa says, "The sale has grown so much over the years that we could not run it without the help from our family. We are two of five sisters and all of our family, including parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins do their part to help make the sale a success. Without them, the sale would not be what it is today."
Over the past several years, the children's consignment sale industry has grown by leaps and bounds. With the economy's rough ride over the last few years, more and more people are turning to consignment sales for clothing purchases and to also supplement their income.
Jennifer Majeske, resident of Cleveland, is a consignor with Ashley Lauren's Closet. She says, "Out of all the sales I have consigned with, I have always sold the most at Ashley Lauren's Closet. They have a great reputation and draw a large crowd. ALC has convenient drop-off times [for your items] and has the check ready when you pick up your leftover items."
Because the children's consignment industry is rapidly growing, competition is fierce to get consignors and shoppers. It becomes important to set yourself apart from the rest. When asked what makes ALC different from other sales, Melissa says, "We are family-owned, friendly, [have the] best quality clothes and an awesome location."
It seems that shoppers agree with her. Jennifer says, "ALC has a large selection of name brand children clothing. They also have the best selection of baby products and toys that I have ever seen at any sale."
