Ashley Judd, who is considering a run for the U.S. Senate in 2014, has announced her split from husband of 11 years, race car driver Dario Franchitti, PEOPLE reported on Tuesday, Jan. 29. The couple have no children.
“We have mutually decided to end our marriage. We’ll always be family and continue to cherish our relationship based on the special love, integrity, and respect we have always enjoyed.”
Ashley Judd, 44, and Dario Franchitti, 39, became engaged in December 1999, and were married on December 12, 2001 at Skibo Castle in Franchitti’s native Scotland. Judd’s sister Wynonna served as maid of honor, Franchitti’s brother Mario was Dario’s best man.
Judd, is the daughter of best-selling author and country singer Naomi Judd, with whom she has had a tumultuous relationship. In a recent interview with Larry King, Naomi revealed that Ashley is seriously considering a run for the U.S. Senate in 2014 on the Democratic ticket, challenging incumbent Mitch McConnell who was just reelected to his fifth term. Ashley Judd is active supporter of the Tennessee Democrats.
In April 2011 Ashley Judd released her memoir, “All That is Bitter and Sweet,” in which she wrote about her trials and tribulations growing up and into adulthood. The publication of the book caused a rift between Ashley and her sister Wynonna and mother Naomi for a short period of time, but the three of reconciled.
