Ashford battles to the end before falling to Troy

The Troy All-Stars pulled out a dramatic 13-12 win over the Ashford All-Stars in the championship game of the Alabama 14-year old Dixie Boys District 6 Baseball Tournament at Miracle Field inside Westgate Park in Dothan late Wednesday night.

With the win, the Troy All-Stars advance to the state tournament in Enterprise joining the 13-year old team who won Tuesday night. The state tournaments are scheduled to begin on Saturday, July 16. The opponents and the times for the opening games involving both teams will be announced next week.

Wednesday night's game had plenty of twist and turns for the Troy All-Stars. But Troy found a way to win when it really mattered the most against the Ashford All-Stars.

This was only Troy's second close game during the 2011 tournament season. Troy defeated South Dale 9-7 in the third winners bracket contest on July 4. Troy has outscored its opponents 42-14 this summer.

The Ashford All-Stars were hoping to set up an "if" game after looking respectable in an 8-2 setback to Troy Saturday night. They nearly pulled it off.

Ashford scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-1 lead. But the defending state champions followed with a five-run third of their own. The key blow in the inning was a two-run double by Hunter Baggett. Baggett would later score on an error. Xavius Burden and Austin Ingram also drove in single runs for Troy to tie the game at 6-6.

Ashford held a 9-6 lead before Troy scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and five times during the bottom of the sixth to take a 12-9 advantage. Burden, Devin Hooks and Reilly Fox each had RBI singles during the rally.

Ashford rallied to score three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 12-12. The key blow was a two-run homer by James Lindsey.

Troy won the game by scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh. After Ingram reached first base, he advanced to second base on a Burden's ground out before Fox drove him in with the game-winning run on a two-out hit.

Troy earned the championship by defeating Luverne (16-2), Ashford twice, South Dale and Dothan.
