Asha is expecting her baby sometime in December of next year. This is the second baby for Asha, an Asia elephant at the Oklahoma City Zoo. According to an October 7 report by KWTV Channel 9 News in Oklahoma City, officials at the Oklahoma City Zoo are focusing on getting Asha the best prenatal care possible.
Asha gave birth to Malee about two years ago. That pregnancy went smoothly. Malee is now a healthy 2,000 plus pound elephant that appears to be thriving.
Malee will be three years old when her brother or sister arrives late next year. The Pachyderm Supervisor, Nick Newby, said this was a great age for Malee to learn mother skills by watching her own mother care for a new calf.
Asha's “baby daddy” is Rex. He is from India and it believed he was born in 1968. He has lived at the Oklahoma City Zoo since December of 2011. He is the father of five other elephants, two girls and three boys.
It appears that the Oklahoma City Zoo is excited by the news that Asha is expecting again. Updates about Asha's latest pregnancy will be posted to both the zoo's Facebook and Twitter accounts.
