Ash Zealot from 'Return to Ravnica' punishes flashback players (Photos)

Featured in the "Rally and Rout" event deck, Ash Zealot is one of several deadly red cards from Wizards of the Coast's expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set "Return to Ravnica."

First Strike, haste
Whenever a player casts a spell from a graveyard, Ash Zealot deals 3 damage to that player.

"Smarter than death? Let's see you outsmart my mace, necromancer!"

Ash Zealot is a fast and furious red threat, punishing players attempting to abuse flashback spells like Think Twice or Silent Departure. That Snapcaster Mage in your opponent's hand doesn't look as attractive when it means they'll be taking a Searing Spear to the face to use it. Ash Zealot doesn't just help against blue players. Unburial Rites decks that pack Faithless Looting will also take a pounding.

As a Human Ash Zealot will pump Champion of the Parish. Because of haste it can enable battalion creatures like Boros Elite, Firemane Avenger, or Frontline Medic the turn Ash Zealot enters the battlefield. With first strike Ash Zealot can always deliver a crushing blow thanks to combat tricks like bloodrush creatures such as Ghor-Clan Rampager or Rubblehulk, making it a valuable inclusion to any Domri Rade based deck.

Ash Zealot has made appearances in aggressive Rakdos decks alongside Hellhole Faler and Rakdos's Return. It also plays a pivotal role in mono-red strategies that begin with a Stromkirk Noble and top out their mana curve with Zealous Conscripts and Thundermaw Hellkite.

How will you use Ash Zealot?
