Ash Lawn-Highland, home of James Monroe, will hold its annual open house on Sunday, November 17, 2013, with free admission for local residents (from Charlottesville, and the counties of Albemarle, Augusta, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson, Orange and Rockingham). The open house site visit will feature tours of the Monroe house. The tour was revised earlier in 2013, and offers new content about Monroe’s contributions to the turbulent early decades of the United States. The guided tour also follows a new route through the original structure, giving visitors a greater understanding of the early architecture.
Acoustic soloist, Timothy Seaman, will be on site to play distinctive original music on the hammered dulcimer and flute. Crafters will be present from 12:00-4:00 PM to demonstrate wool processing, and visitors will be encouraged to try their hand at carding and spinning as well as the historic art of paper marbling.
Operating hours on Sunday are 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Ash Lawn-Highland Museum Shop, including the Artisans' Room, is open during site operating hours. Parking is free.
