Asbury Park, NJ was the sight for the Annual “Born to Tri” Triathlon held on Saturday, August 6, 2011.
Some 300 athletes competed in the event which included a 1/3 mile ocean swim, 12.5 mile bike and 3.1 mile ruin.
The swim started near the historic Convention Hall and went south toward the casino on the south end of the boardwalk to the transition area where the participants changed into their biking equipment and rode out going north along Ocean Avenue toward Deal. In Deal they then turned around and headed back to Asbury park down Kingsley and then another loop of the 12.5 mile course. The run took the participants around Wesley Lake and into Ocean Grove, past the Great Auditorium and then back into Asbury Park through the Casdino and then through Convention hall and a turn back to the finish which was set up in front of the Casino Building.
The water temperature was a comfortable78 degrees for the swim. The temperature heated up to over 80 degrees for the run with the sunny skies bearing down on the runners.
Coming in first for the men was Dave Slavinski of Point Pleasant in an overall time of 52:40. He was followed by Doug Clark of Morristown, NJ in 53:47 and James Chesson of Bedminister, NJ in 53:54. Dave finished seventh in the swim and made up the time on the bike averaging over 26 miles per hour. He did the 5k in a time of 16:44 to demolish the field.
For the women in was Meghan Helwig of Montville, NJ coming in first in a time of 1:05:24. She was followed by Carrie Slavinski in 1:05:42 and Terri Guarino of Nanuet, NY in 1:13:50.
The event was staged by Jersey Shore Multisport and Race Director, Chris Wilcox who presented awards after the race.
