It was a fantastic morning for runners at the Annual Asbury Park 5K held on Saturday, August 14, 2010. The sun shined bright and the temperatures were in the low 70’s with very little humidity making for some great running weather.
The thousand plus runners gathered at Bradley Park across the street from Asbury Park’s Convention Hall prior to the start where an expo was set up on the lawn. Local running clubs were well represented in the field to include the Freehold Area Running Club, Shore AC, Ocean Running Club, Staten Island Runners, Brooklyn’s Shore Runners, Jersey Shore Running Club and many more from the entire tri state area and could be spotted wearing their respective shirts.
The race started precisely at 8:30 AM and was preceded by the singing of the national anthem. The start was a block and a half west of Convention Hall on Fifth Avenue. From thee the runners proceeded west to Grand Avenue and then looped around town back to Ocean Avenue toward Convention Hall where throngs on spectators watched the runners pass. They took another loop through town and then made their way toward the finish by getting up on the famous boardwalk to a finish near Convention Hall.
The first overall finisher in a time of 15:26 was James Gathoga of Newark, NJ. For the women the winner was Alyssa Laguardia of Wayne, NJ (age 16) in a time of 18:21.
After the race, runners were treated to lots of snacks and refreshments in Bradley Park under a sunny sky with a nice ocean breeze. Kids races were held after the 5K and a large group of kids participated.
From there many runners made their way to the post race party inside the Wonder Bar across the street.
The event benefited the Boys and Girls Club.
According to Race Director Phil Hinck this was one of the most successful Asbury Park 5K’s with perfect weather great volunteers and a large field.
One runner had a very special surprise waiting for her at the finish. Check the photo show to find out.
The race is part of the Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix which will culminate at the Pier House 5K on Labor Day in Long Branch.
Next weekend it is the McCormack Run in Lake Como, NJ.

Womans winner was 16 not 14
age corrected - thanks for the info
This was my first time running in this event (I am new to the whole running thing) and I had a great time. It was a beautiful morning to run. I ended up running my fastest 5K time on Saturday morning and I know the great conditions had much to do with it.
apologies to Adam Spickler. I put in only my first name when I wrote my comment and when it appeared, your last name was saddled with it.
