The Annual Asbury Park 5K was held on Saturday, August 13, 2011 in this City by the Sea, Asbury Park, NJ famous for its boardwalk and lively night scene. The weather was near ideal for a summer morning with temperatures in the low 80’s, a bright sunny sky and relatively low humidity. The temperature did seem to warm up a bit as the race progressed.
Runners started on the street a block from Convention Hall and made their way around town down Grand Avenue and back to Ocean Avenue and then made a second loop this time going up to the boardwalk for the final half mile to the finish in front of Convention Hall near Madam Marie..
The field of about a thousand included 90 year old Clarence Lurch who finished the race in a little over an hour.
Coming in first for the men was Robert Cavenaugh of West Long Branch, NJ in a time of 15:20. He was followed closely behind by Craig Segal of Highlands, NJ in 15:24 and then John Traotman of New York, NY in 16:35.
For the women the top finisher was Erin Lunny of Middletown, NJ in 17:34 followed by Sarah Peterson of Belle Mead, NJ in 17:54 and then in a virtual tie Mrissa Alberti of Long Branch also in 17:54.
After the 5K kids races were held in Bradley Park across from Convention hall and wawards were presented on the stage in the park.
The event benefitted the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County.
