In a wide open game that lived up to it’s Derby status, Saturdays Cascadia Cup match between Seattle Sounders FC (2-2-1) and Portland Timbers (0-2-3) was a classic football match.

Both teams came into the match needing some feel good, Seattle was coming off a heartbreaking 2-1 home loss to the Columbus Crew and The Timbers were hoping some home cooking would give them there first home win of the season.

Both teams started on the front foot and never looked back. The game had a frantic, free flowing , nervy pace that never relented.
Seattle Sounders FC Kenny Cooper opened things up with a goal after just two minutes had elapsed. Jalil Anibara was credited with the assist.

Portlands Diego Chara made it 1-1, Portland Timbers other Diego, Diego Valerie made it 2-1 Portland Timbers with fourteen minutes gone.

Seattle Sounders FC Clint Dempsey tied the game ten minutes later. The first half ended with a score line of 2-2.

While both teams went into the dressing room brimming with confidence it was Portland Timbers FC that tightened up there shooting boots early.

Portland Timbers Diego Chara put the Timbers ahead with a wonder strike that turned Seattle Sounders FC goal keeper Stefan Frei into stone.

Chara’s second goal of the game was curling shot that rose up and found the right side of the Seattle Sounders FC net.

Two minutes later Portland Timbers Maximimilano Urruti hit a right footed shot that found the bottom right corner of the Sounders net.

At that point in the match down 4-2 it looked as if the Sounders where dead and buried.

“ We talked about character being one of the things that really want and need on this team and today it should we have that this season.” Sounders Coach Sigi Schmid said after the game.

Character is exactly what Seattle Sounders FC showed even when they where down 4-2 Seattle Sounder FC kept clawing and fighting.
Seattle’s peserverence paid off late in the second half.

Seattle climbed back in the match in the 85 minute when Clint Dempsey right footed a shot that found the bottom left corner of the Portland Timbers net.

Seattle Defender DeAndre Yedlin was fouled inside the Portland penalty box one minute later and the Sounders where awarded a penalty kick.
“ It was important for us to be aggressive and when you play smart and aggressive good thinks usually happen. I was looking to draw the foul,” Yedlin said after the game.

Dempsey converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the game and the wo bitter rivals were tied 4-4 and that is the way the match ended.

‘It’s always nice to get goals, but wins and points is what we are always looking to get.” Clint Dempsey said after the game.

Dempsey’s had trick was the fourth in Sounders history

Attendance was announced at 20,814 the 54 consecutive home sell out for the Portland Timbers.
Seattle has scored 11 of it’s 14 all time goals against Portland in the second half.
Seattle next game will be Saturday April 12 at FC Dallas.
Portland Timbers will host Chivas US on April 12th.
