What I have noticed being a Professional in the design/construction business for many years is that my younger clients want to purchase and obtain things, while my older clients want to purge the things they have already acquired.
I think this is part of letting go of unnecessary ideas and making way for a Greener Lifestyle. The more we have, the more we must take care of and be responsible for.
When my older client go through boxes and save the photos and furniture and things truly meanful to them their faces and spirit light up. At some point in your life you realize what is necessary and what is just clutter.
This is not to say that the younger clients are wrong, in fact we all must acquire to get to a point to be grateful to purge.
Recently, I had the pleasure of retrofitting a bathroom for a retired pilot who came down with Parkinsons and then fell down his staircase and broke his hip. Not only will he never go upstairs again, but he is grateful that we have created a space for him in a downstairs library. His new door into the bedroom and bath is larger to accommodate his wheelchair, and his shower is larger and is sloped with no step to allow him to easily move from wheelchair to shower chair. The sink is wall mounted for easy daily grooming.
His wife was happy to get rid of so many unnecessary items in order to make her husband comfortable.
