One of the most popular actresses in the history of daytime television has passed away. Helen Wagner -- who holds a Guinness World Record for playing Nancy Hughes for 54 years on "As the World Turns" (the longest any actor has played a character of TV) -- was 91 years old.
Christopher Goutman, the executive producer for the CBS soap, had this to say in a statement:
“All of us at As the World Turns are deeply saddened by Helen’s passing...he is loved by generations of fans and while we will miss her greatly, Helen will always remain the heart and soul of 'As the World Turns.'”
After originally debuting in April 1956, CBS has announced that they will not renew the show's contract (a sign of the struggling soap opera industry). The final episode of "As the World Turns" will air on September 17.
