”NV Pere Ventura Brut Cava $13.99
”As a member of the Wineries for Climate Protection initiative, Pere Ventura is fully committed to protecting the environment by reducing their carbon and water footprint, investing in renewable energy and biodiversity, and practicing sustainable agriculture. All Pere Ventura Cavas undergo the “Traditional Method” of sparkling wine production, the same method used for Champagne. Grapes are hand harvested and de-stemmed before they undergo a first fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is done separately for each variety. The juice is then clarified and stabilized before undergoing secondary fermentation which takes place in the bottle. The wine is riddled, disgorged and the dosage is added before the bottle is sealed. The wine is aged on the lees for 27 months. The Bouquet has beautiful notes of Golden delicious apples, citrus and dried nuts, the palate has a broad and firm palate of ripe apples, grapefruit, lemon and brioche. Crisp and balanced.
”La Cala Vermentino 2011 $11.99
”A favorite of the jet set at Sardinia’s chic resorts, La Cala is the ultimate definition of the Vermentino grape. It is romantically named for a small, secluded cove fringed by violet-colored thistles on the edge of the Sella & Mosca estate. Few wines rival La Cala for its exceptional affinity with seafood, thanks to the very subtle presence of a natural marine salinity in the wine, credited to the Mediterranean location of Sella & Mosca’s Vermentino vineyards. Notes of citrus, delightfully floral, crisp and dry with youthful vitality and freshness.
”Planeta Rose 2013 $14.99
Planeta is a Journey through Sicily. And that journey begins at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate which the Planeta family has owned since the 1600s. The indigenous Nero D’Avola & Syrah are blended in harmony for this distinctive rose. Bright notes of wild strawberry, pomegranate with a background of flowery and tropical aromas. Smooth and soft with well-balanced acidity. The winery’s sustainable practices are the cherry on top. 90 points and Top 10 Summer Roses- International Wine Review.
”Portillo Malbec 2013 $8.99
Situated on a high plateau in the Uco Valley of Argentina’s Mendoza region, the Portillo winery and vineyards are dedicated to making superb quality wines for everyday enjoyment. Harmony with nature is readily apparent in every aspect of this property, which is designed to deliver wines that capture and respect the pristine beauty of their birthplace. The Malbec is the first Carbon Neutral Malbec from Argentina, this environmentally conscientious winery, is also one of the most beautiful sites in Valle de Uco. The wine has fresh flavors of redcurrant and black cherry supported by sweet, round tannins ending in a long finish with notes of cinnamon and cloves.
”Mazzei Badiola Toscana 2011 $11.99
Since 1435, the Mazzei family has been making distinctive and exquisite Tuscan wines. Badiola comes from a single vineyard in the township of Radda in Chianti. Intense aromas of dark fruits and cocoa. Soft and smooth on the palate, with flavors of wild blackberries and raspberries; well balanced, with great depth and a long finish. 2010 vintage received 92 pts by Wine Spectator.
”Mazzei Serrata Belgvardo Toscana 2008 $19.99
The pioneering Mazzei family took the helm at the Belguardo estate in Maremma, Tuscany, in the 1990s after recognizing the potential for superb quality winemaking in the local terroir. In the years since, the Mazzeis have established a name for Belguardo among the top producers in this exciting, fast emerging wine region. The Serrata is intense ruby red, aromatic, with scents of ripe cherries, spice and chocolate. A rich, balanced red. Soft and well-structured with flavors of wild berries, spice and herbs.

:THE MIDDLE OF ITALY EXPOSED ($15)
Reds From Tuscany, Umbria & The Marche
Friday, May 16th/ 4-7:30 @ Mt Tabor Fine Wines
“I was a bit disappointed last week with the turnout. I had put together one of the most interesting tastings of the year; The wines of the Jura and Savoie. It wasn’t really a light turnout, It just should have been packed. Luckily the folks that showed were really interested in learning about these great wines and loved them. We almost sold out of everything! For me, this is what being an educated wine drinker is all about. Knowing and tasting the great wines of the world.
“This weeks tasting is a new theme for us, showing the wines of the three regions that are the heart of Italy, smack dab right in the middle. The wines of Tuscany, Umbria and The Marche have a lot in common. They all use Sangiovese but the similarity of cépage stops there. The Marche is known for its Montepulciano- the grape not the town in Tuscany and the most famous and sought after variety of Umbria is Sangrantino. The great Sangrantinos of Umbria are notorious for aging for decades, taking on complex aromas and flavors of spice, leather and clean soil. My kind of wines! I was impressed when I tasted all six wines in the flight. I must say how pleased I was to have access to the Pertimali Brunello from Livio Sassetti. I’ve been collecting this benchmark, traditional Brunello for years and I can tell you wine doesn’t get much better than this with 10- 20 years of cool cellaring. 2008 is a great vintage for Brunelli and this one would make the journey easily. It’s very hard to acquire and I’m thrilled to offer it for tasting and for sale.
