Not enjoying this year’s crop of summer television series? Never fear! Turner Classic Movies is looking out for you. Actually, they’re look back. As part of their Summer Under the Stars, the network digs into their vault and focuses on the movies of a classic Hollywood actor or actress each day throughout the month of August, filling out their schedule with that celebrity’s best works.
The month may be half over, but that doesn’t mean there still aren’t plenty of stars left in the heavens. For example, how about tomorrow’s star? Sunday, August 18, will highlight Natalie Wood.
Born Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharebko to Russian parents, Wood is unfortunately best known these days for her rocky marriage to Robert Wagner and the subsequent mystery surrounding her death in 1981. But her career was varied and impressive from very early on in her life. As a child actor, Wood came to prominence when she starred in the 1947 holiday classic “Miracle on 34th Street.” After that, the roles kept coming. She’d appeared in 20 films before her sixteenth birthday! Throughout her career, she was nominated for Academy Awards three times, including two films airing tomorrow, “Splendor in the Grass” (for Best Actress) and “Rebel Without a Cause” (for Supporting Actress.) Her most famous role is likely “West Side Story,” also on Sunday’s schedule. If you’ve never seen her work, TCM has made tomorrow you’re lucky day.
