As expected, Kovalev walks through Agniew

In his March 29 defense of his WBO light heavyweight title, Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev picked up his twenty-second knockout in the seventh round over Cedric "L.O.W" Agniew.

Listed as a 30-1 favorite by many sportsbooks, Kovalev (24-0-1, 22 KOs), dominated this one-sided affair at the Adrian Phillips Ballroom at Boardwalk Hall. The fight was televised in the U.S. by HBO.

Seeking his seventh consecutive stoppage within four rounds, Kovalev almost ended the fight towards the end of the second when he sent Agniew to the canvas with a solid left hook. Agniew beat the count, albeit barely, as the round came to a close.

Agniew, never really letting his hands go, instead choosing to settle for the Joshua Clottey-esque defense he employed throughout his 2010 bout with Manny Pacquiao, relegated himself to nothing more than a punching bag for the hard hitting Russian.

Kovalev's next fight was scheduled to take place in May in his native Russia, however, due to non punch related cuts, his promoter has decided to cancel that date.

"We were planning to take him to Russia in May but with those cuts he can't fight in two months," Kathy Duva, Kovalev's promoter, said according to ESPN. "So we're going to have to see what's next. Maybe we'll go there in the summer, maybe fight here [in Atlantic City] again. I really believe someday Sergey will be able to fill up the [main arena at] Boardwalk Hall."
