Update, Friday, July 9, 10 a.m.

As the cleanup begins in Oakland, dramatic new video and photos are surfacing of the rioters who brazenly broke windows, looted stores, and set fires in downtown Oakland.

The looters did not seem to be deterred by all the people, both amateurs and professional news crews, who photographed them grabbing and running with looted merchandise.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office said on Friday that a total of 78 people were arrested, 60 men and 18 women.  KCBS radio reports that only 19 of those arrested are from Oakland and 12 are from out of state. A total of 66 people will be released from jail today because they were booked only for unlawful assembly, KCBS reports. The remaining 12 are all accused of felonies including arsons, rioting, possessing explosive devices, and parole violations.

The third video below was posted on YouTube about 9 a.m. PST. It is shaky but it is dramatic as it shows people running in and out of a Jewelry store in downtown Oakland.  The first video shows the cleanup today in front of the Foot Locker store.   The second video shows the Foot Locker store being looted.  Click here for a previous story with more  video.

The last video below is a compilation of video of the actual BART shooting itself on January 1, 2009. When former BART officer Johannes Mehserle shot and killed Oscar Grant, it was captured by onlookers on cell phone video.

There was at least one reported act of vandalism reported outside of Oakland.  In Washington state, a Tacoma police officer's cruiser was trashed and someone spray-painted "Oscar Grant was here" on it.

Oakland riots, looting,  after involuntary manslaughter verdict in BART shooting trial (video, photos)

 Updated Friday, July 9, 2 a.m. :

Oakland Police say 83 people have been arrested following riots that erupted after former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for shooting Oscar Grant.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Robert Perry will have the discretion of sentencing Mehserle anywhere from 2-4 years in prison, with another 3-10 years as part of an enhancement sentence because he used a gun. But it is possible Judge Perry could waive that enhancement at sentencing.

But Judge Perry didn't show any signs of cutting Mehserle any slack. He could have kept Mehserle out on bail until sentencing, but he ordered him to jail immediately. He was handcuffed and led out of court.

After the verdict was announced, Oscar Grant's family spoke out from outside the courthouse to denounce the verdict. They said that Mehserle should have been convicted of murder. Oakland streets erupted into violence as it had in the days following the shooting in January 2009.

Police say as many as 800-1000 people rallied in downtown Oakland after the verdict on Thursday. Several splinter groups ran through the streets of Oakland, setting dumpsters on fire, breaking store windows, and looting.

Vandalized businesses included a Foot Locker store, a jewelry store,  a pawn shop, a beauty shop, a Sears store, a Subway sandwich shop, and a Whole Foods store. News crews showed looters rushing into the Foot Locker and rushing out with shoes.

A woman had minor injuries when she was hit by a slow moving police car. A crew from KGO-TV news was attacked. A photographer was robbed, another KGO photographer was punched in the face and the station's news van's glass was broken.

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums held a press conference and he hinted of a federal prosecution of Mehserle. The US Justice Department has not yet said whether it will take up the case. East Bay Congresswoman Barbara Lee said she has been assured that the Department of Justice will investigate the case.

Mehserle will be sentenced August 6.

 Oscar Grant, BART, Trial

This image provided by the Los Angeles County Superior Court shows a cell phone image taken, according to lawyers, by Oscar Grant, of former San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police officer Johannes Mehserle shortly before Mehserle shot Grant on New Year's Day 2009. Mehserle testified Friday June 25, 2010 that he mistakenly pulled out his pistol instead of a stun gun when he shot and killed an unarmed black man who was lying face down on an Oakland train platform.  This photo shows him pointing his taser toward Oscar Grant before he later pulled out his gun and shot him.  (AP Photo/ Los Angeles County Superior Court)  More photos here.

There is reason that only blacks riot. The same reason is why they do so poorly when it comes to education, employment , parenting, speech, etc, despite 40 years of government help. Its the same reason they were segregated, they wer'nt allowed to vote and the its the very same reason they were slaves. The reason is so very obvious to anyone with eyes and ears, they are a failed race of people and all the wastefull government programs in the world can't cure them

Are you for real? I'm white and after seeing that video I am shocked some douchebag cop got off easy. If he was so well trained how could he make such a negligent mistake? Who is going to protect us from the so called protectors if this waste of tax dollars has to shoot a kid face down? Screw the police and screw you.

Will you must be the most uneducated and moronic person.

I believe there should be no tolerance for chaos that happened. There were please from Oscar Grant's family and other African Americans in the community to keep the protesting peaceful. Sadly, those please fell on some def ears. Look at the videos, they were not just black. Many different types of people were in the wrong.

If you go to predominately white communities that have lower income brackets you see the same poor "education, employment, parenting, speech, etc". In more densely populated areas you will be seeing higher crime rates.

This should not be just about the riots. The riots were just one groups way of leashing out against the unjust that lies with the verdict of Johannes Mehserle. Maybe we should look at some of the other racial intolerance that has repeated it self over history. As a non black member of Oakland, I feel the frustration of that verdict. Some times people project their emotions in the wrong

helloooo, justice was served, the jurors not anybody else made a decision and if Mr. Grant's family doesn't agree with it,they can pursue other avenues. There is no need to trash Oak.the cycle never end. What will happen to the business that were vandalized, will these business' remain in Oak. if it was mine I wouldn't, can they afford to reopen? if not? less jobs!!! whose fault?
