Arum's unlikely new old cash cow

Count on a shrewd promoter like Bob Arum to make the most out of an opportunity when it presents itself. For the life of the octogenarian, there's just no other way. Many think of him as greedy, some even think he's a crook, others consider him an untrusworthy liar. In other words, he is exactly what they say he is: A boxing promoter.

It may not be as sweet, but there's a science behind promoting the sweet science. We as fans have all the right to complain when we don't get the fights that we want, but in reality, things are not quite as simple as it seems. If it were, then why aren't there more successful boxing promoters out there?

They say luck favors the prepared. That very well may be the case when Arum faced a conundrum after his cash cow Manny Pacquiao got the scare of his career last November when "the dead man walking" that was supposed to be his nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez, trashed the script and almost beat his most prized prizefighter.

Many actually felt he did, this writer included. What followed was an outrage from fans and boxing media and insiders alike. An obviously disappointed Marquez threatened retirement due to his disgust over the outcome, and voiced his displeasure against Arum and the judges after the fight.

"I didn't slap him (Arum), because he is already old. I'm a respectful person, but I got so pissed when he said 'it's business'," Marquez told the Mexican media.

These are the type of situations where great boxing promoters crumble and lose their 'mojo'.

Arum has been in boxing since the 60's for a reason. The man makes lemonade out of lemons; sees opportunity out of adversity. There's promoters out there that are good with numbers, give great sound bites and speeches, but Arum isn't a great promoter. He's in a class of his own.

So instead of succumbing under the controversy of Marquez and boxing fans' claims of a robbery, as well as failed talks for yet another Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, Arum has himself a new formula to make the most out of his predicament.

Instead of just dismissing Marquez's claims or giving in to his demands for an immediate fourth fight with Pacquiao, or the pressure cast upon him by fans, the media and the Mayweather camp for blocking the fight the world wants to see, he now has himself a blueprint to maximize his yield with cards he's been dealt.

Just like that, Arum has the biggest draw in the Mexican boxing scene back in his corner. And by all means, Arum plans to capitalize on his newfound success. With Mayweather still insisting on wanting to promote the Pacquiao superfight himself by trying to force Arum out with his tactics, the Harvard law school grad has a tournament in the works that will allow him to keep profiting off Pacquiao without Mayweather, and make more money on the side marketing Marquez, who he once promoted and is now back in bed with him due to the fighter's obsession with defeating Pacquiao.

Arum is planning to have Marquez and Amir Khan tormentor Lamont Peterson to go through an eliminator fight, and a tune-up card in Mexico prior, for the right to face Pacquiao possibly in November, while Pacquiao fends off Timoth Bradley in May.

Call it what you want, but that to me is simply genius.

And if Mayweather comes around, it's not like that won't be a fight Arum can't make if the cards are stacked in his favor. So for the time being, at least for the current year, Arum has himself another profitable superstar in Marquez who just shot his stock back up after his sensational performance against Pacquiao last November. And by promising Marquez a couple more paydays leading up to facing Pacquiao again down the road, how can the Mexican say no? And as much as Pacquiao is still his main cash cow, Marquez is a cash cow on his own.
