Arum prevents Montiel and Donaire participation in bantamweight tournament, fans lose again

Once again, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who heads the biggest and arguably the best boxing promotional company has upheld his 'capitalistic' ways against the best interest of boxing fans.

The issue is coming from Arum declining the participation of Nonito Donaire Jr. and Fernando Montiel in Showtime's proposed 118 pound / bantamweight tournament which includes heavy-hitters Vic Darchinyan, Abner Mares, Yonnhy Perez and Joseph Agbeko similar to their middleweight tournament that has elevated the names of Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell.

The tournament has already created a buzz among hard core boxing fans and is the type of gimmick boxing needs right now to salvage it's fledging reputation and win back some of it's disgusted fans after the fallout of Mayweather-Pacquiao. Just imagine those six big names in the lower weight classes going at it at a round-robin tournament.

But instead Arum told our guy in LA, Ricardo Lois,

“I don’t want my guys fighting in there just because there are big paydays,” said Arum. “If one gets hurt and is in a condition where he should not keep fighting, I don’t want them in there.”

My response to that is, first of all, why would any boxing commission, trainer or promoter allow anybody who isn't fit to compete, fight in any bout? Wasn't Jermaine Taylor pulled out of the Super Six Middleweight tournament?

Okay let me guess, perhaps he will respond by citing the same reason he did to our pal Lem Satterfield at Fanhouse.com on why he is pushing through with Pacquiao-Margarito despite fans opposing it. Arum said, "That's capitalism. That's what this is all about. That's what a lot of these press guys don't understand." I get it. It's all about the money. Given a choice between making $50 and $100, any business man would take the bigger amount, unless of course they care about their consumers, especially if they've profited so much from them in the past.

Fellow promoter Gary Shaw responded to Arum's statement by saying, “I have heard many excuses, but that is a brand new one,” Shaw told the Los Angeles Boxing Examiner. “ I respect Bob Arum, and he can do whatever he wants with his fighters.”

I respect Arum too and fact of the matter is, Top Rank is by far the best in the business right now, so by all means Arum can definitely do whatever he wants with any of his fighters. So if he chooses to let Nonito Donaire Jr. fight 10 more bums before you ever really see Top Rank push his career the way it should, that's Arum's prerogative. Who are we to say anything right? We are just lowly media men and boxing fans who don't know anything about 'Capitalism". Right? Riiiiight. Pardon the sarcasm.

Which leads me back to Donaire and Montiel. Arum promised fans he would have Donaire fight Montiel in November during the post-fight press conference in Puerto Rico last July 10. Hopefully  he keeps his word because that would be the only legitimate reason why he would bar the top two bantamweights from participating in such a potentially exciting tournament.

So long as Donaire vs Montiel happens by year-end, it's ok that Top Rank didn't participate in this tournament.

Donaire has bigger fish to fry after Montiel.

  • Gil P. Acosta 1 year ago

There is no need for Donaire and Montiel to join that tourney.

  • Arum 1 year ago

Sarcasm?? I didn't see it. YOU really are a lowly media man.

  • Jersey Joe 1 year ago

Dennis, If by your own admission, Top Rank is the best in the business, then why question Bob? Top Rank did not become the best if Arum did not know what he's doing.

  • Foxad 1 year ago

Ignorante!!!...Dennis, you go back to your mountain where you belong...By not participating is the best decision Top Rank can do to Donaire coz he'll be going up in weight and challenge the real contenders at superbantam and featherweights.

  • Republican 1 year ago

Hopefully Showtime will reach out to Michael Domingo and Gerry Penalosa to take the two vacant spots in the tournament.

Even without Top Rank, it would still be a great tournament.

  • filipinosupremo 1 year ago

well if nonito doesnt fight montiel one of my other dream fights with donaire would be against abner mares

  • Sese 1 year ago

    @Foxad

You will have to forgive Dennis. No oxygen is getting thru his brain.

His head is stuck deep in Nonito's A S S

I hope Donaire-Montiel would be an under card or co-main event to the Manny-MArgo fight or Chavez Jr-Cotto fight.

I think Bob does not want to deal with Gary Shaw anymore. Remember the Donaire-Darchinyan 11 negotiation that failed to materialize because Vic chickened out? I think that's one of the reasons why Bob does not want his fighters to join this tournament.

    @Foxad..

I strongly agree with you.. even before, donaire stated that he wants to move up in weight and challenge the champions. he won't be able to do that if he'll join the tournament.. so why join the tournament right?

i want to see that fight in as under card of Pacquiao Margarito fight!...

this tournament can't help nonito, in chess it's ok, right decission nonito!

  • marc 1 year ago

so effing what? as long as we get a donaire-montiel this year, fans still wins. its not like this tournament is about money too.

  • cra 1 year ago

oh! eto na naman ang mga boxing fans at experts kuno. don't you guys get it!? Bob(ong) arum(tado) wants to keep the money in-house and does not want to share the profits with the other promoters and boxers participating in the tourney. bakit di nyo buksan ang mata nyong nanigas na sa muta at makita nyo kung gaano kalaking katarantaduhan to!? pa-rehab kayo mga ungas!!

  • pidjanga 1 year ago

AJ Banal will join the tournament in behalf of Donaire.

If the Donaire vs Montiel World Bantamweight (118 lbs) Title Match will move to Cotto-Chavez bout on December 04, 2010 then Donaire should fight for a world title first at Super Flyweight (115 lbs) in late September or in October 2010. It should be against Hugo Fidel Cazares (WBA interim champ vs regular champ) or Vic Darchicken (WBA interim champ vs super champ), and it should be mandatory. Then prepare for a bantamweight title match against Montiel in December 04, 2010.

  • dhahndao 1 year ago

who cares about tournaments like that. donaire is a p4p lister he gonna try to climb up in weight might fight wilfredo vasquez jr.,juanma lopez, yuriorkis gamboa and rigondeaux.

  • Truth 1 year ago

Yes you are right to expose this issue Dennis. It looks like the Donaire-Montiel bout might not even happen either. Top Rank needs to get their act right.

  • criticking 1 year ago

yeah i agree with dhahndao. who cares about that tournament. all i care is for bob arum to keep his word- donaire vs montiel on the undercard of pacquiao vs margarito on november 13. and it would only make sense of pacquiao mights margarito at 154 pounds NO CATCHWIEGHT!!! to determine if pacman really is a pound4pound king the best in the world.

pacquiao must fight margarito at 154 pounds NO CATCHWEIGHT that's pound4pound not catchwieght4catchweight. if pacquiao fights margarito at a catchweight and wins, he doesn't deserve to be called pound4pound king but catchweight4catchweight king. hey pacman, i'm your number 1 fan but ENOUGH FOR CATCHWEIGHT. if you really want to challenge margarito then fight him at the right weight limit of super welterweight which is 154.

  • criticking 1 year ago

pacman, if you really want to be called pound4pound king, then fight margarito at 154 to shut your detractors' mouths up. your critics say, you only won against cotto because he was dehydrated due to catchweight. instead of fighting cotto at 147 welterweight limit, you fought him at 145 catchweight. so ENOUGH FOR CATCHWEIGHT OK?

  • criticking 1 year ago

i don't like watching pacman fight margarito at 150. there's no real challenge there. it's the same old story margarito will have no hope if he fights pacman at 150.

  • jackbw9 1 year ago

Arum probably learned his lesson with Cotto-Margarito. He lost both franchises after painstakingly building both their careers. He was willing to sacrifice a loss from either one of them to turn it into a profitable trilogy like he did with Pacquiao & Morales. But he didn't expect the beating will be serious enough to damage the loser's career. And then he lost the winner to hand wraps and a Golden Boy. Pacman practically saved Top Rank while destroying Golden Boy. Pac-Floyd would have been for all the marbles but it turned ugly outside the ring.

  • raden 1 year ago

aRUM can never be mistaken as stupid, let them destroy each other in that tournament then Donaire and Montiel will be waiting in the wings for the ALREADY SPENT winner thats what you call ARUM sense

  • cra 1 year ago

yan! at least may sense na itong mga latter commenters. ang hirap kse sa iba porke walang masabing maganda eh mang-iinsulto o kaya mang-aasar na lang dun sa nag-sulat. inggit lang kayo siguro, yan ang utak talangka!
The fight should happen, I agree. best it be soon since boxing is already at the verge of extinction. these exciting match-ups should keep it alive!

THE FIGHT OF PACQUIAO VS. MAYWEATHER WILL END UP LIKE PIROG VS. JACOBS. BEFORE THE FIGHT, JACOBS HAS SUPER UNPARALLELED SKILL AND PIROG HAS NO CHANCE OF DEFEATING THIS SUPER SKILLED PROSPECT OF THE YEAR BY AN UNKNOWN OPPONENT WHO HAS NO PUNCHING POWER LIKE PIROG. AS YOU HAVE NOTICED BEFORE ROUND 1, PUNCHING POWER OF JACOBS WAS OBVIOUSLY EMPHASIZED BY APPEARING ON THE SCREEN: K.O. IN ROUND 1 JACOBS = 10 AGAINST PIROG = 1. BUT AT ROUND 5 OF THE FIGHT... BOOM!!!! THE ESPN PROSPECT OF THE YEAR BECAME ESPN SH!T OF THE YEAR!!!!! THIS IS ALL WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT SKILL SKILL SKILL WHICH PACQUIAO IS ZERO AND 1 DIMENSIONAL FIGHTER. BWAHAHAHA!!!!

  • Speaking with Sense 1 year ago

@criticking, it is Margarito challenging Pacquiao not the other way around! Pacman wants to fight at 150 lbs, so it the Plasterman who must move in that weight. Besides he is already doubly lucky: he has had only a mediocre win in his last fight yet he is already challenging the 7-time champion and for a windfall at that! How lucky can one get. I wouldn't mind getting down to that weight and losing because I would have more than enough even if I retire after the fight. What is this I head the firght is for a world title? A win for Margacheato would be a triple treat!

  • SecondsOut 1 year ago

If Arum doesn't get Nonito some quality fights he will destroy Donaire's career, he needs to cash in while he is in his fighting prime not waste away fighting bums!

    what fight

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

donaire's career might die with only having the darchinyan victory. no one wants to fight him or is he not working hard to get matchups with top fighters. donaire might retire fighting no big deal fights and get his talent wasted. I hate anticipating donaire's next fight cause it's a waste of time. he's in a no lose situation but a no big fights opportunity situation too.
