Take a free trolley ride through Lakeview East and the North Halsted business district during Artview in Lakeview. The event is part of Chicago Artists Month.
Along with discovering new galleries to browse and artists to watch, the month’s art walks and festivals are a chance to discover interesting neighborhoods, including Lakeview.
For Artview, 11 venues ranging from galleries and studios to shops and lounges on Halsted Street, Clark Street and Broadway Avenue will host art exhibits and offer refreshments from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 21.
“We wanted people to know there are galleries outside of River North and downtown. They are in the neighborhoods,” said Lakeview East Chamber Director Maureen Martino.
Started in 2005 with just galleries, Martino explained that seven “alternative” spaces will be exhibiting art for the first time in 2011. “We didn’t want just art in the windows as pop up galleries. We wanted people to come in, interact and get to know our retail shops,” she said.
Galleries participating in Artview are: The Leigh Gallery 3306 N. Halsted St., Slaymaker Fine Art 934-36 W. Roscoe St., Art de Triumph and Artful Framer Studios 2938 N. Clark St., M+D Gallery 2933 N. Clark St.
Alternative spaces displaying art are: ID Chicago 3337 N. Halsted St., Gallery Swarm, 2902 N. Clark (inside Olson Rugs), Loose Leaf Lounge 2915 N, Broadway Ave., Foursided 2939 N. Broadway Ave., Spare Parts 2497 N. Broadway Ave., 10 and Real Art 3173 N. Broadway Ave., Spex 3760 N. Broadway Ave.
