It is a common thing these days to hear people (especially new transplants) talk of a lack of Art and Culture in Midland, Tx. These statements always carry a sting for many locals. Older citizens remember the days when restaurants were havens for artists and musicians on a constant basis. People could bring in their work to hang on the walls or walk in with an instrument case to play and sing to the patrons. Nowadays there are only a few places that still cater to the open artistic atmosphere; Jersey Girl Pizza in Odessa and The Ground Floor in Midland being a few. But the arts culture is still a strong if seemingly unknown prescence here in the Permian Basin.
The older form of freestyle artistry may have died out somewhat but culture is still very much present here. Every year Midland Festival Ballet produces several performances, the Cole Community Theatre runs a full season of plays, and the Celebration of the Arts and Septemberfest bring local and not-so-local artists together for a fete of music, arts of all genres and all around enjoyment for everybody.
On a more constant basis there are organizations like The Museum of the Southwest, ArtiZen Outlet, Midland Art Association, and multiple small local galleries who offer year round exposure to beauty and inspiration in all forms. Many of these groups offer classes, lectures and other forms of education which are open to any one. Even Midland College offers chances to expand your artistic knowledge in a continuing education format.
And in Oct. 1013 the Midland Cenvention and Visitors Bureau will be presenting the first annual Music and Wine Festival in Midland Tx. Bringing music, wine, food, and art from all over Texas, together in one place for two days. A connoisseur of any sort would find it worth their while to pay a visit.
Any and all of these places and events can be found in a few simple clicks on your browser or smartphone. So, before you decide there is nothing to do or see on your free Saturday, take a few minutes to find out just how much is going on. It's worth the effort, I promise.
