Spanish director Calixto Bieito began rehearsals for Camino Real, the Tennessee Williams play slated to open at the Goodman Theatre on March 12. For his first original American production, Bieito collaborates with longtime artistic partners Catalan playwright and co-adapter Marc Rosich and German set designer Rebecca Ringst, as well as Chicago-based costume designer Ana Kuzmanic, lighting designer James F. Ingalls, sound designer Richard Woodbury and music director Andra Velis Simon. The cast includes David Darlow, Matt DeCaro, Tony Award nominee André De Shields, Marilyn Dodds Frank, Carolyn Ann Hoerdemann, Antwayn Hopper, Travis A. Knight, Monica Lopez, Michael Medeiros, Mark L. Montgomery, Jonno Roberts, Barbara E. Robertson, and Jacqueline Williams. Tickets can be purchased at GoodmanTheatre.org.
The Rosemont Theatre has a new name: Akoo Theatre at Rosemont. "Akoo is the perfect partner for the theater," said Harry Pappas, executive director of the theater in Rosemont. Barbara Abbott was named the winner of the Chicago Loop Alliance’s Lightscape Valentine’s Day contest. Claiming her prize, Abbot dedicated You Are The Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne to her husband Ben as a special Valentine’s Day gift. The song was featured once an hour during the choreographed light show on February 14.
For the first time, the Government of India has given the Vivekananda Memorial Program for Museum Excellence grant to an American art museum. The Art Institute of Chicago received the grant last month in support of a new professional exchange program between India and the museum. "It is a supreme honor to be recognized by the Government of India as a partner in the preservation, exhibition, and promotion of India's cultural heritage," said Douglas Druick, President and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute. "This rededication of the site of Swami Vivekananda's speech and the Vivekananda Memorial Program for Museum Excellence are both living testaments to the long relationship between the Art Institute and India, going back to the earliest days of the museum's history. Over the years our partnership has flourished, and we are gratified by and excited for what will be a milestone in our collaboration."
In less auspicious news, the presenters of the North American tour of Grigorovich Ballet regret to inform the public that due to a delay in obtaining visas, the performances of Grigorovich Ballet which were scheduled for the Arie Crown Theatre in Chicago, for February 24-25, have been cancelled. Patrons who had purchased tickets to either performance may receive a refund at the point of purchase.
