The largest art competition in the world, ArtPrize, returns to Grand Rapids, Michigan next week. The 19 day event begins on September 18 and runs through October 6. The international competition, now in its fifth year is open to any artist and decided by public vote.
A three square mile area in downtown Grand Rapids is transformed into an enormous art gallery. More correctly, it transforms into hundreds of galleries. Some of the venues are actual art galleries, but restaurants, bars and churches also host entries. There is even art in the middle of the Grand River. Time Magazine called ArtPrize one of "Five Festive Events You Won't Want to Miss in 2013."
The public votes for their favorites during the first 10 days. Then the Top 10 are announced and the public votes again for the top prize of $200,000. A panel of international art professionals also awards a $100,000 Grand Juried Prize. In all $560,000 of prize money is awarded.
This year over 400,000 visitors from across the globe will take in the 1,524 entries. One of the most enjoyable parts of ArtPrize is getting a chance to talk to the artists. Several of the artists are on-site with their work and very happy to discuss it with the public.
