Artomatic 2012 goes global! But first it returns to Crystal City for its free arts extravaganza!
Artomatic returns to Chrystal City, VA for the second time (the first was in 2007), housed in it's biggest space to date - the Transwestern Presidential Tower, 2511 S. Clark Street, with a special opening night celebration on May 18. The show will run through June 24, 2012.
At its last event in 2009, Artomatic attracted more than 76,000 visitors to see work by more than 2,500 artists and performers. For the past few years, Artomatic committee chairs, board members and volunteers embarked upon a challenging mission to find its next venue to host its vast artistic family. Since its last big show in 2009, Artomatic remained involved in artistic events, hosting several successful exhibitions such as the Surreal DC magical Halloween 2010, Surreal DC 2011, and Artomatic takes flight. Artomatic 2012 has finally launched and the
wheels of building space transformation are in motion.
On January 28, Artomatic masterminds and volunteers had their kick-off meeting at Transwestern Presidential Tower. Over 75 DMV volunteers showed up to voluntarily serve on the various committees that make it all happen: volunteer coordination, marketing, site operation and management, fundraising and sponsorship, bar and entertainment.
George Koch, Artomatic’s founder, painter and creative instigator also made the announcement that Artomatic was going global!
In an exclusive conversation with Koch, Artomatic's paterfamilias noted that the Artomatic model – focused on the community of the artists, for the artists, free to participate and transform an empty building/space into an artistic representation - was fully trademarked in 2011. Since then, official licensee's such as Artomatic@Frederick have been huge succesess, and, prompted the whole globalization concept. Today, Artomatic is in conversations with Sunderland, England (Sister City of Washington DC) and Vancouver, BC to launch Artomatic model in their respective cities and mobilize the arts community in the UK and Canada.
