The Porter Contemporary gallery in Chelsea, is currently presenting a group exhibition called Starting Small. The show offers a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography, and mixed media works by more than 30 artists. The title of the show comes from the idea that many artists and collectors of art start out with small means and on limited budgets. Notable works in the show include Mind Flow, a dreamy acrylic painting by Naoto Hattori, Zombie Larry David by an artist known as “BEPPO” which is a portrait of the comedian with injuries on his head with a deadpan expression on his face.
Other notable works include Custom Made a mixed media collage of an individual with distorted facial features by Jeff Huntington and Travis Wagner, and a couple of acrylic on cloth pieces titled Animals I and Animals II respectively by Kathy Greenwood. Animals I features two rabbits in the background gazing at each other with a bowl of water in front of them and a bird nearby, and a pair of glasses and a set of pliers in the foreground. Animals II features two kittens standing together in the background with a figure of an angel and a shovel in the foreground.
