The Chambers Fine Art gallery in Chelsea is presenting an exhibition titled Guanshan Gathering, a collaboration between Zheng Shengtian and Wang Dongling. Shengtian is an influential scholar, curator, and artist and Wang Dongling is a well-known calligrapher who also studied at the China Academy of Art where he earned his MFA degree.
For Shengtian and Dongling’s current collaborative project, the two are working from Shengtian’s video installation of his wife writing in ink on canvas while Canadian artist Hank Bull reads Clement Greenberg’s essay Modernist Painting in the background. Four types of canvases were used in the installation and, due to the lack of harmony between the water-based ink and the surface of the canvas, the ink marks became smaller, leaving behind an uneven pattern of dots.
At Chambers Fine Art, 522 W. 19th St., through Feb. 22. The gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. There will be an opening reception at the gallery Jan. 9th where Wang Dongling will offer a video demonstration of his calligraphy.
