The Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California announced yesterday that it is partnering with the Montclair Presbyterian Church and Kehilla Community Synagogue to sponsor a fall Interfaith Art Exhibit.
The sponsors, which call their inspiring collective “The Faith Trio,” are three Oakland-based organizations from the Abrahamic traditions (Christianity, Islam, and Judaism) that have collaborated for the past five years to improve interfaith working relationships. By sharing meals and participating in each other’s worship services, the members of each of these spiritual communities have grown to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences of their respective faiths, and hope to encourage others across the Bay Area and Northern California to do the same with their sponsorship of a new art exhibit: Diverse Visions of Harmony.
Organizers of the exhibit have informed this Bay Area Spirituality Examiner that they are seeking pieces of art for Diverse Visions of Harmony that have been created "as original works of art" by those who submit works for consideration, and are works of art that express the Faith Trio's "commitment to interfaith understanding, peace and cultural exchange.”
Artists from all faiths communicating their visions for a better world in any media (painting, drawing, calligraphy, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass, textile, and mixed media) are invited and strongly encouraged to participate in order to truly convey the inspiring variety of the world’s spiritual traditions. Each artist may submit up to a total of five works. (For additional submission requirements and instructions on how to submit work for the exhibit, please see the ICCNC's web site.)
Diverse Visions of Harmony will be juried with entries “judged on their relevance to theme, creativity, and quality of execution by a committee representing the Faith Trio congregations.”
The deadline for artist submissions is July 25, 2011. Diverse Visions of Harmony will open with a reception for the artists and general public on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California, 1433 Madison Street, Oakland, California. The exhibit will then continue at the Center through October 2011.
Those who enjoy art or simply hope for a better world are cordially invited by the Faith Trio to attend the exhibit in support of this opportunity to foster interfaith understanding.
