Beatriz Grayson, from Winchester, MA, was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ms. Grayson studied at the School of Fine Arts in her native country, at The Arts Students League in New York City and she also studied Interior Design and Graphic Design at Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, NY.

In the last twenty years she has worked primarily with fabric, producing a great number of art quilts.  In addition to her art work, Ms. Grayson has written articles for fiber arts trade magazines,  has taught and lectured to different quilting associations and is in her third year teaching Fabric Collage at the Jenks Senior Center, in Winchester, MA.  In between large projects she has experimented in the creation of fabric and thread bowls and the publishing of calendars illustrated with her photos.

Her work has been collected nationally and internationally and has been shown in group and solo shows, in private galleries and in museums.  The New England Quilt Museum, in Lowell, MA, has recently acquired one of her quilts for their permanent contemporary quilt collection.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"For a good part of my life
other media were my preferred mode of expression
but in the past twenty years
I have worked almost exclusively in the quilt medium.
It is for me a metaphor for making the best of life,
of the cards one is dealt.
This type of work reflects my notions of
appreciating  the chance encounter,
embracing diversity,
tolerating the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated textures.
I like to think that I live the examined life
and
that I revise my choices for the best quilted outcome.

I believe that one of the gifts of being a creative person is that
if reality is not what I wish it were,
I can imagine and then create an artistic reality that suits my wishes.
Sometimes what results is wishful thinking,
a suggestion,
a memory
and then, other times, a soft protest.

All my pieces reflect loves and interests, past and present.
On occasion I just make things up.
They are all episodes of a longer story,
the creative journey from my mother’s sewing room to my studio."

Bea Grayson's art quilts are on exhibit in the third floor gallery, at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown MA. The gallery is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 12-8pm, through May 21, 2009.
