Artist Jasper Johns's birthday

Jasper Johns was born on May 15 in Augusta,GA in 1930. He is an artist best known for his paintings and mixed-medium works of American flags and targets. His work has been categorized into different art periods such as Abstract Impressionism, Pop Art, and Minimalism.

Jasper Johns was raised in South Carolina and began drawing as a child, and knew at age 5 that he wanted to be an artist. He attended the University of South Carolina at Columbia, and later moved to New York in 1948, where he attended the Parsons School of Design.

One of John's early well-known works is Three Flags (1958), in which three canvasses are stacked, one on top of the other, in what looks to be reverse perspective, projecting toward the viewer.

In the mid-to late 1950's he used subjects such as the American flag that were familiar icons to the viewer, as well as targets, numbers, beer cans, and maps. In his later works he inserted actual objects into his work, such as paintbrushes and light bulbs, and has also worked in sculpture and printmaking.
