Artist Interview: Deanna Wilson

What is your name: Deanna Wilson

Do you have a formal art education or are you a self taught artist:
I have had several artist/teachers since I began painting in the 1980s. Currently, I am studying with Bonny Leibowitz at The Bonny Studio in Richardson, TX.

What is the style of your pieces:
Abstract/contemporary

What is the medium in which you work: I work with oils on canvas.

What started you on your path as an artist: I have always been drawn to color and the ability to express myself through the use of color, even as a child. I think I first began to think about using paint/color to share my inner-self in my early teenage years, but didn't really begin to pursue being an artist until the 1980s when I took a painting class from an artist friend.

What is one of the most important things that art has brought to your life:
Art has brought me a sense of myself and the world around me in a way that only art can.

What is your favorite genre of art besides the one you work in: I love the performing arts, particularly musical theatre. Music touches my soul.

Do you have art showings, and if so what are they typically like:
I have had several exhibitions in the DFW area. Most have been in a gallery setting, but I have shown at American Airlines in their headquarters buildings where the paintings were only seen by employees or people doing buisness there, and at UT Southwestern Medical Center in the Library. Currently, I have paintings at Art is Art Consignment on Henderson St. in Dallas, TX.

Do you have a certain set of clothes you make art in: Yes, I usually wear the same pair of old pants and a white shirt that has paint on it.

What has been the most frustrating part of being an artist?
Getting the paint to do what I want it to do.

What is your favorite sandwich of all time:
The Celebrity Cafe makes a ham/cream cheese/pinneapple sandwich that I love.

Has this year brought about any changes in your work, and if so what are they:
I am painting more and have created a small studio space in my home so that I can spend more time creating.

Who is your favorite artist alive or dead:
Georgia O'Keefe; Diego Rivera

What is the most moving piece of artwork that you have seen in person:
Georgia O'Keefe's Black Iris

Do you have any animals, and what do they think of your work: I have three dogs: two Yorkies and a Yorkie-Pomeranian mix. They love my work (because it means I am very close by them.)

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions you would like to share with us: I have paintings at Art is Art Consignment on Henderson St. in Dallas.
