The Uinversity of Pittsburgh Athletic Dept. announced that junior center Artie Rowell has been named to the Rimington Trophy preseason watch list. The Rimington Trophy is named after former NFL center Dave Rimington and it presented each year to the most-outstanding center in college football.

"There's been a lot of great names on that watchlist over the past years," Rowell said. "It's an honor."

When Panther head coach Paul Chryst arrived at Pitt in 2012, he felt that Rowell may not have fit in with his style of game. Rowell decided to stick it out and stay with the Panthers rather than transfer and his hard work paid off.

After winning the starting job as an underdog in preseason camp last year, Rowell started all 13 games in the 2013 season. He capped the season by earning all-bowl team honors in the Panthers' 30-27 win over Bowling Green in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

Rowell is one of four returning starters on this year's offensive line. He feels the entire offensive line has worked hard in the off season, both on and off the field.

"The team comes in from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. There's conditioning and lifting. After that, we do individual work on the field, and then we watch film together," Rowell said. "The summer's going great. All the offensive linemen are preparing for the season."

Rowell joins fellow Panthers Tyler Boyd and James Conner as members of preseason watch lists. Boyd is a sophomore receiver/athlete and Conner is a sophomore running back/defenisve end. Both were named to the Maxwell Award and Paul Hornung Award watch lists.
