Say what you want about his weight, his politically incorrect jokes about “flimsy” sports stars, and his intermittent substance abuse. Comedian and Howard Stern Show co-host Artie Lange still has the biggest heart in radio.
Artie Lange has signed on to perform a benefit concert for the “Friends for Adam Niskar Trust,” a fund that benefits a Michigan man who was paralyzed after a diving accident in 1999. The Friends for Adam Niskar Trust is a fund set up by Adam’s friends and family to raise money to cover his ongoing medical expenses. The benefit concert will be held at the Detroit Opera House on Friday, October 9th will all proceeds benefiting the Friends for Adam Niskar Trust.
Adam Niskar’s brother Ross wrote a letter to The Howard Stern Show after reading about Artie Lange’s experience with his father’s paralysis in the comedian’s bestselling autobiography Too Fat to Fish. The Niskars credit an “eager intern” with bringing the letter to Artie Lange’s attention. Within a week of receiving the letter, Artie Lange was on the phone with the Niskars looking into arrangements for a benefit concert.
Ross’s wife and de facto spokeswoman for the benefit Brooke Niskar spoke about the Niskar family’s feelings about Artie Lange:
“Without question, our entire family is extremely grateful to Artie for doing this for Adam. We knew Artie has a big heart from listening to the show but this goes above and beyond anything we were expecting. We know there are so many Artie Lange fans out there that this benefit concert will be a huge success.”
Brooke Niskar also noted that Artie Lange has completely waived his performance fee for the event.
Artie Lange has been signing on for a lot of benefit events lately. He recently joined the Killers of Comedy tour for an event to benefit Howard Stern Show Wack-Packer Yucko the Clown. Before that, Artie Lange signed on for a series of performances to benefit the victims of Wack Packer Captain Janks’ legal entanglements.
Tickets for the Friends for Adam Niskar Benefit will go on sale Friday, July 31st at www.FriendsforAdam.com and through Ticketmaster. Ticket prices range between $30-60 per seat.
