Howard Stern reported during Tuesday morning's Howard Stern Show broadcast that he has finally spoken to Artie Lange and the tortured comedian is still in "bad shape".

Howard Stern has had difficulty contacting his co-host since Lange's widely publicized suicide attempt in early January, but told his listeners that he was in touch with Artie over the weekend.

The conversation was both awkward and brief according to the King of All Media himself:

"Artie and I ran out of s--- to talk about in three seconds," said Howard Stern.  "I felt awful afterwards.  I wish I could have said something."

Since adjusting to the initial shock of the news of Artie Lange's suicide attempt, Howard Stern has fiercely defended Artie Lange against his critics on-air and expressed deep sadness about Lange's plight.

Although Stern was careful to reveal no details regarding Artie Lange's current whereabouts, his statements about the lengthy process it took to get in touch with Lange indicates that he is likely somewhere seeking treatment under close supervision.

Howard Stern says things might have gone more smoothly with the Artie Lange phone call if he'd had co-host Robin Quivers to back him up on the phone call and coach him through it.

"It's like doing the radio show.  I need Robin by my side," said Stern.

It's hard for anybody to talk to people in times of crisis. NO ONE knows exactly what to say.
