Artesia's Whitmere No-hits Bloomfield Bobcats 8-0 in State Baseball Championship

Artesia High School pitcher Trevor Whitmere pitched seven innings of no-hit ball against The Bloomfield High School Bobcats Saturday as Artesia won 8-0. It was the second first-round win for the Bulldogs in the 2012 New Mexico State High School Baseball Championship. Koby Lewis started the scoring for Artesia in the bottom of the first inning on its home field. Kaz Foster was on base and Lewis drove him home with a bases-clearing triple down the right field line.

Whitmere came to bat and hit a ground ball off of the pitcher's leg for a base hit that scored Lewis and gave Artesia a 2-0 lead. Bloomfield replaced its hurler with pitcher Luke Duggan. Then Whitmere stole second base with Matteo Deporto batting. Deporto flew out to the right fielder, Jorden Nelson grounded out to the third baseman and Donovan Orosco popped-out foul to the first baseman. Bloomfield came to bat in the top of the second inning with Artesia winning 2-0. Whitmere struck out the side. Jacob Salazar and Andrew Garcia went down swinging and Anthony Martinez was caught looking.

Duggan shut down the Bulldogs in the bottom half of the second inning. But in the bottom of the third inning left-handed batter Foster tripled over the rightfielder's head. Lewis drew a walk for Artesia. Whitmere wasn't just effective on the mound. He came to bat and beat out an infield single to the shortstop. His hit allowed Foster to score from third base to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Deporto grounded out and Nelson came to bat with runners on first and third. Nelson drove a double down the leftfield line to put Artesia up 5-0. Donovan Orosco came up and grounded out to the shortstop to drive in Nelson. Jaylen Fuentes struck out to end the inning but the Bulldogs were winning 6-0.

Whitmere continued his dominating performance against Bloomfield in the top of the fourth inning. With one already out, he got Clay Payne to fly out to Orosco in centerfield. Then he caught Salazar looking at a called third strike. Artesia tried to add to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. But the Bobcats played good defense as shortstop Rockey Mackey went high in the air to his right to snare a line-drive off the bat of Zane Pittam. Lewis tripled deep over the head of Salazar in centerfield for his second triple of the game. Salazar misplayed the ball as he took two steps in before realizing that the ball was going over his head. Artesia did not score as Whitmere popped up to the leftfielder.

Andrew Garcia grounded out for the Bobcats in the top of the fifth inning as Bulldog first baseman Jorden Nelson made a fine play digging his infielder's throw out of the dirt. Anthony Martinez became just the second baserunner of the game for Bloomfield as he drew a walk. But the Bobcats couldn't drive him in. Deporto walked in the bottom of the fifth inning for Artesia after fouling off a 3-1 pitch. Nelson also walked as Bloomfield brought in relief pitcher Jacob Effenbaugh. Orosco fanned on a 3-2 pitch but Braeden Morgan doubled to drive in the final two runs for Artesia. Whitmere struck out Donovan Flores in the top of the seventh inning for his 12th strikeout of the game.
