Art Museum Educator Susan Rosoff explores beauty in modern art at the Phil

Susan Rosoff, art museum educator and managing member of Susan Merrill Rosoff Arts and Museum Consulting, LLC, presents the final lecture in her series on how to look at modern art on Wednesday, February 15 at 10 a.m. in the Toni Stabile Building, located just south of the Philharmonic Center. The topic of conversation will be What Happened to Beauty?

Artists who knew about the Holocaust and lived under the threat of nuclear annihilation could no longer make conventional, predictable “pretty art.” What evolved were Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, Mark Rothko’s painted fields of color, Robert Rauschenberg’s “combines” and Louise Nevelson’s gargantuan assemblages. In her lecture, Susan Rosoff will explore the mysterious ways in which artists use materials and technology to present diverse ideas and concepts that make us think.

Susan Rosoff is known for the engaging way she demystifies modern art. Over the course of her long museum career and her university teaching, Rosoff has developed clear, informative lectures that illuminate the ideas and techniques behind the revolutionary art of the 20th century. After each talk, the audience is invited into the museum galleries to explore how ideas discussed in the lecture are evident in the work on display.
