Art Institute of Chicago closes Modern Wing European Gallery for repairs

The Art Institute of Chicago has, without any media mention, closed the European Galleries of the barely four-year-old Modern Wing.

The Modern Wing was built at a cost of $294 million. The museum closed the galleries on September 3. Although a beautiful space, the Modern Wing has had construction issues. The galleries' patrons have shown up to the 3rd floor only to find a placard reading, “Come celebrate the opening of the modern galleries April 2014.” Some signs have also been placed on the ticket counters mentioning the inaccessibility to the area.

Erin Hogan, museum spokeswoman, provided little additional detail except to say, “We’re doing work on the galleries. It’s easier to do it all at once rather than piecemeal.”

Prior to the re-opening in seven months all the glitches will be ironed out, and painting and refurbishing will have been done. The cost of a ticket to the museum is $23, but there is no highlight section for the European Galleries, which is usually what occurs when a gallery is closed for some time.
