The Orange County Administration Building isn't the first place you might think of when looking for art in downtown Orlando. But the modern brick and glass building on the corner of South Rosalind and Church St is actually home to a surprising quantity of artwork.
For starters, sculptor Roy Shifrin's “Winged Runner” makes it's home in the Administration Building's courtyard. The muscular bronze figure was originally cast in Barcelona, Spain, and used to be display at Sea World. It's sibling sculpture “The Leaper” (1976) is located right around the corner.
There's more artwork to be found inside the building. On Monday October 4th from 5:30 to 6:30pm, the doors of the chambers where County Commissioners deliberate important issues will be thrown open to the public for an art viewing a reception.
Lynn Pauley's illustrations will be the focus of this showing. Lynn's has been published by the New York Times, New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, and other notable outlets. She's also done large-scale corporate commissions for Orlando's Convention Center and the New York Jets.
The display has been curated by local performance artist Brian Feldman, who was requested to assemble the exhibit by Orange County Director of Arts & Cultural Affairs Terry Olson, as part of Feldman's “Available” project. That month-long performance piece involved Brian performing a variety of odd jobs and odder tasks, as ordered by both fellow members of the arts community and random strangers.
Brian has chosen to highlight Pauley's sketches of tourist attractions around Central Florida, including Gatorland, Kennedy Space Center, Universal Studios, and (of course) Walt Disney World. Be sure to check out the Mexican Donald Duck hanging behind the Commissioners' dais!
