Art Around the Town
Living in Orange County is great with so many things to see and do! Why not explore the world of art and enjoy the beauty of the ocean along with some pretty impressive and influential works of art. Between February 23 and June 1 the Laguna Art Museum presents the work of Wayne Thiebaud, a Northern California artist, mentor and Art instructor. He spent most of his youth with his family in Long Beach, and remains sentimentally attached to Laguna Beach. Mr. Thiebaud has selected the works for this exhibition entitled: American Memories. At 93 years old, he looks back at his life and work. The show comprises a career as painter, draftsman and print maker spanning 5 decades.
Wayne Thiebaud is best known for his paintings of colorful everyday articles, including his yummy foods and production line objects: lollipops, cupcakes, shakes, ice cream cones and pastries, to name a few. He is considered a Nouveau Realist and Pop Artist, however, many of his paintings predate the style of pop art and therefore he may have had an influence on that particular movement. He prefers to call himself a painter. His use of layers in bright hues and heavy pigment give his paintings a beautiful brilliance. The viewer can’t help but smile when viewing the work of Thiebaud, as it truly is captivating and perfectly drafted. His long time Art dealer and friend Alan Stone (since deceased) has said of Mr. Thiebaud, “A great painter whose magical touch is exceeded only by his genuine modesty and humility.”
