Arson suspect killed by MSP following chase

A Washtenaw County man in his 20s was shot and killed Tuesday morning when he threatened officers with a knife after a two-county chase. No one else was hurt in the incident.

Northville police officers spotted a suspicious vehicle near 6 Mile and Napier at about 2:30 a.m. this morning. The pick-up’s license plate had been covered over.

The pick-up was in an area of Northville Township in Wayne County where there had been several suspicious house fires over the past couple of days.

Just then a nearby car caught fire.

The officers wanted to question the man in the pick-up, but he sped away, firing shots at the police. The officers took up the pursuit.

The Michigan State Police joined in the chase.

The suspect crossed over into Washtenaw County and entered Salem Township.

The chase ended when the suspect lost control and slammed into a house near 6 Mile and Dixboro. Then he led police on a brief foot chase.

Police found the man behind a barn. He then charged an MSP trooper with a knife.

A trooper fired a single round into the suspect. He was dead at the scene.

Police have not yet released the man’s name.
