Black History Month: Soweto Gospel Choir’s tribute to Nelson Mandela

The Adrienne Arsht Center will present Miami debut of Soweto Gospel Choir, one of South Africa’s premier performance group, as they launch Black History Month at the Arsht Center with a tribute to Nelson Mandela.

The choir will also celebrate 10 years of hits with a celebration showcasing the 24-member choir’s signature mix of African gospel, reggae, and original arrangements of American pop music on February 5 at 8:30 p.m. in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall, 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33132.

The Soweto Gospel Choi is the winner of one Emmy, two Grammys, three South African Music Awards (SAMAS) and one Oscar nomination for their song “Down to Earth” from the movie Wall-E.

Since the release of their Billboard Word Music chart-topping debut album Voices of Heaven in 2002, Soweto Gospel Choir has performed at the 2009 Academy Awards, 2010 FIFA World Cup and sell-out concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, the Nelson Mandela Theatre and Royal Festival Hall in London, among many others.

The choir has also performed for President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, as well as received praise for its performances with Bono, Aretha Franklin, Robert Plant, Celine Dion, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, John Legend and Queen.
