Arrogant pedestrians

Sidewalks, shopping malls, theme parks; what do these places have in common? These are some of the places that are frequented by the dreaded Inconsiderate Sidewalk Surfer. Allow me to explain. You're walking and encounter a fellow pedestrian and are seemingly forced to yield the right of way to them, you have encountered an ISS. These people will never alter their path even a little bit, and if you maintain your course and refuse to change your path: BOOM, COLLISION!  They don't alter their path, why should you alter yours, right?  Regardless, this would most obviously be your fault, so you should expect the sure-to-come dirty looks and disgruntled sounds from the ISS.  Trust me, I've tested this theory and advise to attempt only at your own risk.  The reality of the situation: you yield to them, bite your tongue, and walk away shaking your head.

The only plausible conclusion is that these people are so self-satisfied and pleased with themselves that they believe it is acceptable to act with a lack of common courtesy, and they are right! They're right because people who exemplify common courtesy are usually not conceited, nor arrogant, nor impressed with their own status (more often than not, pseudo-status). Does the ISS honestly believe that they are better, cooler, richer, smarter, or in any way superior to the rest of society, and based on this premise it is that they do not have to alter their paths? All it takes is a little six inch alteration in each person’s path and just like that you have created ample space for both people to pass each other in a manner that is congruent with that of traditional normalcy, as opposed to what has become permissible in present society: inconsiderate asininity.  This proposition is in direct opposition to the ISS's usual illogic which goes like this, "walk straight and all these peasants will move out of my way"...as if the ISS's are so far superior over everyone else.

One thing is for certain, and that is how the ISS proves to be the epitome of inconsideration and arrogance. It is fair to say that all of us do owe a debt of gratitude to the ISS, for it is their utter rudeness that makes us appreciate and contrasts with that of a common courtesy (path altering, door holding, etc.) that in today's society, unfortunately, is becoming more and more uncommon.

I was walking to my car, last night, after having just eaten at one of the sushi restaurants you recommened(By the way, it was great!)and that exact thing happened to me. You are so right! What ever happened to common courtesy? The only other plausible possibility, that I can think of, might be the day-dreamer or the person who is overly preoccupied for whatever reason.

Amen! What ever happened to common courtesy and manners? It's sad but true that those things are now a welcomed surprise instead of the norm. Thankfully, you exemplify those characteristics each time I see you..and that's a blessing! Thank you!

Nicely said Tom. I usually walk on a sidewalk like driving on the road....If everyone stayed on the right side and only crossed when they need to turn elsewhere, life would be a little less aggrovating, but then again, i could practice my deep breathing exercises after a rude encounter.
