Arrests made in the gang rape of Swiss woman cycling in India

Five men were arrested today in connection with the Friday night gang rape of a Swiss woman cycling with her husband on holiday in central India, according to USA Today.

All five of those in custody have admitted to the rape.

During their cycling trip in Pradesh, the woman and her husband were setting up camp on Friday night and had pitched a tent in a wooded area near Jatia village. That’s when “they were attacked by a group of men armed with wooden sticks,” according to police.

The woman and her husband told the Indian police that the 39-year-old Swiss female tourist was raped “by seven or eight men.” Police say the husband was also attacked.

The men beat up the husband, tied him to a tree and then raped the woman, police said.

This latest Indian gang rape comes only three months after the highly publicized gang rape of a 23-year-old student raped while riding a bus in New Delhi. That young lady died from injuries sustained in the assault against her.
