Arrests in the Craigslist murder case have been made. Two suspects were reportedly arrested and charged for the murder of Rene Balbuena. According to a report from late Monday (Oct. 28), Markell Thomas, 18, and Ryan Roth, 17, were charged Monday with murder, attempted murder and robbery with special circumstances.
It is those "special circumstances" that have made this a national news story. It is alleged that the two teens killed a father who answered a Craigslist ad for a cell phone in South L.A. When he pulled up in his SUV, they allegedly demanded money from him before shooting him in front of his 15-year-old son.
The crime itself took place back on Oct. 19 and police stated that both suspects were part of the same gang, and at least one of them was part of seven similar robberies in the Baldwin Hills area. It is unclear what led police to link the suspects in those other crimes to this one, but more information is expected to be released by the authorities in the coming days.
Speaking about the arrests that had been made in the Craigslist murder case, the wife of the man shot stated, "We're just really thankful that no one else is going to get hurt, and that this is all going to end."
